Stacie McGinn Slams Woodson Bradley for Missing Final Vote on “Iryna’s Law” in Second Digital Ad
CHARLOTTE, NC – In her race for Senate District 42, Stacie McGinn launched a second digital ad titled “I’ll Show Up” - focusing on HB 307 “Iryna’s Law” and her opponent Woodson Bradley’s failure to appear for the final vote.
At 23 years old, Iryna Zarutska boarded Charlotte’s Blue Line when she was killed at the hands of Decarlos Brown Jr., who had previously been arrested 14 times in North Carolina. Video of the incident quickly spread nationwide, sparking outrage over the loopholes in the criminal justice system that allowed a repeat violent offender back onto our streets.
The Republican-controlled General Assembly got to work to right this terrible injustice and passed “Iryna’s Law.” Signed into law by Governor Stein, the bill eliminated cashless bail and put further restrictions on pre-trial detention programs. It was a major step towards improving public safety in our communities.
As State Senator of the city where this tragedy occurred, Woodson Bradley had a responsibility to her constituents, and to Iryna’s memory, to be part of the solution. She chose instead to take an “Excused Absence” for the final vote.
